Replacing a missing or damaged diamond or gemstone requires more than choosing a stone that looks approximately right. The replacement needs to suit the dimensions of the setting, stone shape and cut, while the surrounding metal must be secure enough to hold it correctly.
Diamond and gemstone replacement
We assess jewellery where a diamond, coloured gemstone or other stone has fallen out, become chipped or needs replacing. This can include rings, engagement rings, earrings, pendants and other stone-set jewellery.
A replacement may need to be matched for size, shape, colour and visual character, particularly where it sits beside existing stones. The condition of the setting is equally important: fitting a new stone into worn or damaged claws can leave the replacement at risk.
When stone replacement may be needed

What happens when a diamond falls out?
We first look for the reason the stone was lost. Worn claws, a damaged setting, distortion or previous repair work may need attention before another stone is fitted. Replacing only the missing diamond without correcting the underlying problem can result in another loss.

Selection can involve the type of stone, dimensions, shape, cut and appearance. Where a replacement sits beside existing stones, matching the replacement to neighbouring stones can also be important. The correct approach depends on the jewellery and the role of the missing stone within the design.

Can you assess a missing diamond from photographs?
Clear photographs of the whole item and close photographs of the empty setting are useful for an initial assessment. Some jewellery still requires physical inspection before the exact replacement and repair work can be confirmed.
Do not continue wearing an insecure setting
If another stone moves, clicks or the claws appear damaged, stop wearing the jewellery until it has been assessed. Continuing to wear a weakened setting can put additional stones at risk.
